Chapter 14

“FRANCESCA. UP BABE.”

Frankie groaned as Aren shook her shoulder again. She turned on her back and stretched, marveling at her sore muscles. Even after two weeks in the safe house, she was still finding muscles she’d not used in a while. Though most of those muscles were sore from the sex she and Aren had last night.

“Rewa, get dressed.”

“What’s wrong?” She peeked open an eye to see him dressed, impatiently standing over her.

She scrambled from the bed and threw on her discarded clothes. He didn’t answer her question, just rushed out the door. She hightailed it behind him, the two of them thundering down the stairs. He led her into the living room. Fynn and the oracle were there, along with some warriors she hadn’t met before and the trainees from her class. She rushed over to sit next to Jamie. Once Aren entered the room, Fynn addressed them all.

“Remember at the tribe gathering I talked about activating hunting protocol? We have our first location. According to my father, Nala has been hiding there at some point.”

Cheers went up around the room.

Fynn held up his hand for silence. “There’s no guarantee that she’s there still, but, this is our first raid and I am excited to see how well you all do.” He waved his hand and one of the new trainees stood.

Frankie gaped as Patrick went to stand next to the Ijoye.

“Patrick here can sense power, and he worked with the Oracle this morning and has located a stash of magic at that location.”

This time the cheer went up from the trainees. Frankie clapped, excitement making her heart leap.

“What kind of magic?” someone asked.

“We don’t know. But, we’ll soon find out.”

He nudged Patrick towards Ajani. And they headed for the training room, leaving the trainees in the living room. Frankie kept an eye on Aren through the open door, antsy. She wanted to be going with them on the raid. She tried to pull the ‘this is my case’ card when he went to go look at her last victim, it didn’t work then, she knew it definitely wouldn’t work now. This had nothing to do with missing women. All the new trainees were talking about the raid, speculation running wild among the group as to what kind of magic they’d find, and if there would be vampires. Frankie didn’t know or care, she just wanted to be there. She’d never been one to sit out on the sidelines, and she itched to don the protective gear and follow them. She promised herself that she was going to work that much harder at her training. She didn’t like the feeling of watching Aren suit up to go somewhere dangerous without her.

He turned to her, his lips quirking at her thought. ‘You care about me,’ his amused voice flowed through her mind.

She snorted. ‘Just…don’t die.’

He smiled. ‘I will stay connected to you the entire time, will that help?’

Her eyes widened at his concession.

‘Despite your denial, we are mates and fellow warriors, I will treat you as such.
